Nabi salla Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam being afflicted by magic

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I was reading a book called Faqir Rang. I am confused about the statement made by the writer about Jadoo on Prophet Mohammad (pbuh). That he never suffered from jadoo at all. I am enclosing a copy of that page for your kind advise. The writer’s name is Syed Sarfraz A Shah of PAKISTAN.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, we advise that you confirm from reliable ‘ulamā’ the status of the literature you decide to read. Many deviants hide their poison under a blanket of flowery language and apparent love for Islam and Muslims. We advise that you read Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Saheb’s (Rahimahullah) books in the field of Tasawwuf.

Mufti Shafi Saheb (Rahimahullah) has discussed the issue of Nabi salla Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam being afflicted by magic in his famous commentary, Ma‘āriful Quran, under verses 102 and 103 of Surah Baqarah. The summary of Hazrat Mufti Saheb’s discussion is that being afflicted by magic is not contrary to the position of nubuwwah (prophethood). Magic is also performed by adopting certain worldly means. Just as thirst, hunger, sickness, etc. is not contrary to the position of nubuwwah, being afflicted by magic does not take away from the position of nubuwwah. This reality is established in various authentic narrations.

You may refer to Ma‘āriful Quran verses 102 and 103 of Surah Baqarah for more details.
