Can a sin be a gift?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

is it possible that Allah gives us an opportunity to do gunah as gift????…..
becauz i just came back after spending 4 months in jamath, and since i decided to change my life i restricted  myself from various gunah … last night one of my cousins offer me a chance to zina but out of Fear of Allah i rejected and slept…
later at midnight i wokeup and straight away went to my cousin and committed  zina …but believe me as Allah is the witness i was in semi conscious state  and could not restrict my self , even i didnot even have the thought of restricting myslef nor considered that i was doing gunah and while doing zina i was in adopt wether it was dream or reality…..

later on finshing i was so disappointed  and so sad , that i believed that my all efforts of 4 months went wasted and i even left my fajar salah that day because i didnot woke up … but when i narrated the whole incident to my friend he told me that i will not be punished nor i will have the gunah for doing zina since i was in such a state that i could not control my self … He also said that since i am restricting my self from all those sins which were my daily routine ( such as music, zina , drugs etc) i was been gifted the gunah  by Allah same as the condition that you have the full intention to read Tahajud but if you fell asleep u get the reward of Tahajud and the sleep was a gift from Allah… plz explin clearly all the issues…

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Brother in Islam,

Our life in this world is a test. If one does good deeds he gains the pleasure of Allah Taala and is rewarded by being given thawab which is recorded in his book of deeds as a good deed. On the other hand if one does evil or a bad deed, then he gains the displeasure of Allah Taala and is punished by being given a ghuna (masiyah) which is recorded in his book of deeds as an evil deed.

A good deed is the opposite of an evil deed. Similarly, the pleasure of Allah Taala is the opposite of the displeasure of Allah Taala. Hence, there is no way that a ghuna (sin) can be a gift that Allah Taala wants a person to commit. Allah Taala says in the Quraan:

وَذَرُوا ظَاهِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَبَاطِنَهُ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْسِبُونَ الْإِثْمَ سَيُجْزَوْنَ بِمَا كَانُوا يَقْتَرِفُونَ

Leave outward sin and inward sin. Surely, those who commit sin shall be punished for what they used to commit. (Al Anaam-120)

Committing zina (adultery) and leaving out Salah purposely are major sins and a means of the wrath and anger of Allah Taala. One can only be forgiven by Allah Taala after sincerely making tawbah (repenting from the sin). Hence, your friend’s opinion of you not getting sin for the acts that you perpetrated is incorrect.

Your analogy of a person making the intention of tahajud and does not manage to wake up but still receives the reward to a person that unintentionally commits zina is incorrect. Waking up for tahajud is a good deed through which one derives the pleasure of Allah Taala while zina is a sin the causes the anger and wrath of Allah Taala.

If you want to reform, inculcate the quality of accepting your wrongs. Never justify your wrongs. If you do so, you will never reform and never get tawfeeq to change yourself. Admitting ones wrong and regretting over the wrong is a stepping stone for one’s spiritual upliftment.

However, any sin committed by a person should not make one despondent of the mercy of Allah Taala. Allah Taala mentions:

Say (to my servants Oh Rasulullah), do not be despondent of the mercy of Allah over that which you have transgressed. Verily, Allah is the forgiver of all sins. He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Al Zumar-53)

Therefore, make sincere tawbah from your past sins and concentrate on the future. Attach yourself to the daily Jamaat effort and spend time in Jamaat regularly, attend lectures of the Ulama, keep the company of the pious and stay away from any avenue that would lead you to sin in the future.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
