Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The purpose of istikharah is to remove the doubt a person has whether he/she should do such a thing or not. Istikharah is for the contentment of the heart and it is asking Allah to put khair (good) in what we are going to do and to make it easy.[1]

If husband and wife feel that they cannot live together, even after trying every solution, then the last option should be divorce. It is permissible to do istikharah for divorce meaning to get the satisfaction of the heart if one should ask for divorce or not. But it is very important to keep in mind that if a person has made up his mind for something, then istikharah will not change his mind. Istikharah should be done to ask Allah ta’ala to put blessing in the decision one has already made. However, if one has not decided which option to take, istikharah should be done to help him choose one.[2]

If, in result of istikharah, one feels content in making up one’s decision, then that path should be taken in the respective matter. If after a few years the person wants to do the same thing again and wants to do istikharah, there is nothing wrong with that either.

If after seven days of istikharah, a person is still undecided, he should continue to seek council from trustworthy people.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
