Clarification regarding Fatwa# 30984

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My question is in regard to Fatwa#: 30984

The advice given regarding qadha salats, it states that :

  1. Shaykh Mulla Ali Qari Rahimuhullah expresses upon this in his commentary of Sahih al-Bukhari, Umdah al-Qari under the following Hadith:

مَنْ نَسِيَ صَلاَةً فَلْيُصَلِّ إِذَا ذَكَرَهَا، لاَ كَفَّارَةَ لَهَا إِلَّا ذَلِكَ

If anyone forgets a prayer, he should pray that prayer when he remembers it. There is no expiation except to pray the same.[26]

I am in the position where i was born a muslim, growing up in my childhood from the time of compulsion for prayer ( 12) to about age 21 i was not praying and if i did it was not consistent and in spurts as this was not unfortunately something we were pressed about growing up.

My question is i dont remember how many prayers nor when exactly i missed them, so what is that i need to do?

I am extremley concerned regarding this.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The importance of salah and the gravity of missing it cannot be overemphasized. Nabi salla Allahu ‘alahi wa sallam has said, “The differentiating factor between a man and disbelief/polytheism is salah.”[1] Make an earnest pact with Allah to never miss a prayer again. If you err, do not delay in turning and repenting to Allah.

Since you have missed prayers for nine years, perform at least one missed salah before or after every current prayer for the next nine years. If you have an estimate of the number of prayers (and which ones) you have performed, you may deduct that amount from your total. You should make a chart for this purpose.[2]
