Internet Bill

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have subscribed to a limited Internet connection package at home. The monthly rent of the package is 79 Dirhams for 15 hours, beyond which the extra hours will be charged at a certain rate. My usage is more than 15 hours every month, but my bill is always coming 79 Dirhams every month. I had informed my Service Provider regarding my extra usage. No action has been taken.

Please advise whether I can continue with my current plan or should I upgrade according to my usage, in which case I need to pay more.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, the onus is on the service provider to collect their remuneration. It is clear that you did your best to bring it to their notice and that their failure to bill you the extra charges is an act of negligence on their side. Their lack of initiative in this matter, despite you informing them about the extra usage, has absolved you from any sin in this matter. As such, you may continue with the basic prescription or you may change to an alternative plan that reflects your Internet usage better. In the former case however, it needs to be borne in mind that you are not automatically absolved from your debt, despite their neglect and your reminders to them. If they come after ten years to claim their debt for the extra usage, then you will be morally required to compensate them accordingly.
