Statements of Kufr

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I would like to ask one or two more questions on this topic from a page which I was reading online, which quotes from respected Hanafi imams (http://hidayaresearch.com/the-supplement-to-word-or-act-of-kufr/)

The question relates to saying “how nice” or “Ma Shaa Allah” to a haram action, which the page counts as a statement of kufr.

I will give some examples below from the page:

– Saying “how nice” when seeing a haram action such as musical instruments.

– Mixing musical tonal recitation with the Quran and saying “how nice” (such as Qari Abdul Samat – this is differed upon anyway so I can’t see how it would be disbelief)

– So and so is a nice person with a nice heart (if they don’t pray).

As for myself, I have said similar statements, but I will show you my intention.

– I once told a person who drew a portrait – “Ma Sha Allah, it’s nice” meaning he has good pencil drawing skills but I knew/believed the drawing is haram.

– There is somebody who works with me who doesn’t pray. I said “He has a good heart” because he is very scared of not praying and he even saw Yaum al Qiyamat in his nightmare and he wants to be better. His feeling of fear is what I meant is good in his heart.

– Some people I know they say “how nice” to music and the like but Allah subhanahu wa Taa’la has told us that some haram things are sometimes loved by the human, like wine drinking and sexual relations before marraige.

The third example is a friend who said “it was so good” about a bad thing he did before marriage, he means “this things make me fool good and happy and releases desire, but they are haram and bad for me in the aakhira”.

So in the three examples I gave above, would stating that such sins are good and nice, whilst still believing they’re haram constitute disbelief?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, it is imperative to understand that one must exercise utmost caution in matters of takfeer.[1] If the statements in the provided link were mentioned in the context whilst having imaan, then it would not lead to kufr[2], however, it is nonetheless complacence in deen which is a major sin.

Furthermore, we advise that one should discontinue in reading the contents on the provided link.

All the other statements you refer to are inappropriate but does not constitute kufr[3], exercise precaution from uttering such statements.
