I would like to know whether its permissible or impermissible to get discount offer from Bank cards on food outlet?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I would like to know whether its permissible or impermissible to get discount offer from Bank cards on food outlet.

Scenario: We usually avail discounts in restaurants by using specific debit/ Credit cards which is offered by several outlets in town. E.g. if you pay through XYZ Bank card, you get 10% off. So if we payout via this xyz card, we avail discount on market value. (There’s no element of credit involved)

If in this scenario bank pays back to restaurant the 10% of discount we availed, I assume its out of bank earnings, and questionable for interest. isnt it?

Or if, restaurants waive off discounts and doesnt recieve anything from bank either, (assuming that they’re in an agreement), would these discount be considered doubtful or not?

I would be really grateful for your response,

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The discount offered by the store due to using a particular debit or credit card is permissible. The relationship between the bank and the store has no bearing on the card holder and his dealing with the store.

P.S: We have not discussed the technical issues of the various relationships between the card holder, the bank and the vendor to avoid complications and confusions.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
