Unknown Haidh Period

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

After having medical treatment, a woman no longer has a regular bleeding habit. She does not even remember what her habit used to be prior to medical treatment.

Now she is unsure if she has experienced a valid Tuhur and she bleeds an irregular number of days. For example, she bled from 1/01/2014 – 06/01/2014, then she was unsure if she bled again in that month. She bled again for a few days between 3/02/2014 – 09/02/2014 and also from 23/02/2014 – 27/02/2014. These are the only records of her haydh that she has.

Briefly, a woman does not know which days in a month are haydh, which are istihaaza, and which are classed as her Tuhur: what should she do?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakatuh.

In the enquired case, such a woman would calculate her Haidh periods as follows:

From the 01/01/2014 till 06/01/2014, which is five days, she will count her first Haidh period. The remaining days from the 06/01/2014 till 03/02/2014 will be counted as her Tuhur period.

Her second Haidh period will be counted from the 03/02/2014 till 09/02/2014, which is five days. Her bleeding from the 23/02/2014 till 24/02/2014, which is one day will be her Istihaadhah period. Thereafter, her bleeding from 24/02/2014 till 27/02/2014 which is three days will be her third Haidh period.

In future, she will follow her new Haidh period which is three days.
