Visiting the graves of the pious

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

For some time I had the desire to visit the grave of Hadhrat Mufti Mahmud Hasan sahib Gangohi (nawwarallahu marqadahu), but the question about the intention when doing so makes me hesitate till today.

As I understand the general motive in Islam behind visiting a cemetary is to remember your own death, so if there is no other objective besides that then with which intention should we visit the graves of the Saliheen or even Sahabah?

If there is an extra factor of gaining their barakah? Then doesn’t this sound like some Barewli concept of benefitting from the dead? And if it is really a means of barakah, then what doeas the barakah really mean to us? How does their barakah facilitate or manifest itself in our lives?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible (mustahab) to visit the graves of pious people.

Apart from the general benefits of remembering death when visiting graves, to visit specific graves of the Sahabah and pious is an expression of love of the visitor.

Shari’ah has encouraged us to express our love and attachment to the pious. The effect of such an expression will manifest itself by the person adapting some of the good qualities of the pious by studying the biography of the pious person and emulating him.[1]
