Naming one’s child and calling him Muhammad

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My Name is Bilal Warsi and I want to keep my son’s name Muhammad Warsi and call him by name Muhammad.

Please advise me can I keep this full name for my child and call him by Muhammad.

Whenever we read/listen or speak of the name of Muhammad, we automalically start reciting durood sharif. So calling my son by the name of Muhammad sometimes confuses us. Please bring some light on this issue. We want to have name Muhammad just to get blessings from Allah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to name a child Muhammad and to call him by that name. You will only be required to say: sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, if, by Muhammad, you meant the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam. Hence, if you call your son Muhammad, you will not be required to say the darood sharif.
