Is it inappropriate to say “Holy Prophet”?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have a question regarding the saying “Holy Prophet”

Allhumdulillah we recently established a Mussalla in a small town in USA. We are trying to do small amals in the there and also jamaats are coming as well. We are currently reading hadith in english from Muntakab hadith and Riyad Us Saliheen which are compiled in India by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Kandhalwi R.A. or Maulana Muhammad Saad Kandhalwi I believe.

So the question is there is a Arab brother who is originally from Jordan and claims to follow the Hanafi school of thought. So we usually take turns reading hadith so today he had to read and his remark was that the saying “Holy Prophet” in the hadith is incorrect and we should not say it.

The brothers are confused as we have been reading these hadith for a long time now and all of a sudden we get told not to say that. Inshallah I hope if you can please explain if its ok or not to say “Holy Prophet” if we read the hadith?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The phrase “Holy Prophet” is simply an expression of respect and honor. It is not said as a Fardh, Wajib or Sunnah; therefore, the expression “Holy Prophet” is not a bidah.[1]
