If one intentionally uses deodorant spray knowing that you are fasting and then despite your efforts to hold your breath or cover your mouth and nose with a cloth you still inhale and you feel the smell strongly on your nose, will the fast still break and will the kaffarah have to be performed?
And is intentionally deodorant is used but one forgets to take measures to prevent inhalation will the fast break then?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, if one uses a deodorant spray or any other spray that has a chemical form and makeup in the state of fasting and such a spray passes one’s throat while fasting unintentionally, then one’s fast is not broken.
However, if such sprays pass one’s throat intentionally, then one’s fast is broken on account of such an action.[1]
Since the passing of such sprays is unintentional in both the scenarios in reference, one’s fast is still valid.
If one’s fast is broken due to the intentional inhalation and passing down of such sprays, then both Qadha and Kaffarah becomes Wajib.[2]
We advise one to be more cautious and careful when using such sprays as they could jeopardize one’s fast.

“أو دخل حلقه دخان بلا صنعه” لعدم قدرته على الامتناع عنه فصار كبلل بقي في فمه بعد المضمضة لدخوله من الأنف إذا أطبق الفم وفيما ذكرنا إشارة إلى أنه من أدخل بصنعه دخانا حلقه بأي صورة كان الإدخال فسد صومه سواء كان دخان عنبرا أو عودا أو غيرهما حتى من تبخر ببخور فآواه إلى نفسه واشتم دخانه ذاكرا لصومه أفطر لإمكان التحرز عن إدخال المفطر جوفه ودماغه وهذا مما يغفل عنه كثير من الناس فلينبه له ولا يتوهم أنه كشم الورود ومائه والمسك لوضوح الفرق بين هواء تطيب بريح المسك وشبهه وبين جوهر دخان وصل إلى جوفه بفعله
او دخل حلقه غبار أو ذباب و هو ذاكر لصومه يعني لا يفطر لأن الذباب لا يستطاع الامتناع عنه فشابه الدخان و الغبار لدخولهما من الانف اذا طبق الفم قيد بما ذكر لأنه لو وصل حلقه دموعه أو عرقه أو دم رعافه أو مطر أو ثلج فسد صومه لتيسر طبق الفم و فتحه أحيانا مع الاحتراز عن الدخول ( البحر الرائق، ج 2، ص 273، أيج أيم سعيد، كراتشي)

We make Du’aa you are well. The Darul Iftaa was established in the year 2011. The fundamental objective of the Darul Iftaa is to train Ulama from various parts of the world to become Muftis. In this world of scientific calculations and technological advancements, economic confusion and political disarray, a Mufti is trained to understand and analyze current situations and provide leadership for the Ummah. There is a vacuum of competent Muftis in various parts of the world. The Ummah lacks leadership. There are currently twelve students who are studying at the Darul Iftaa. They are from United States of America, United Kingdom, Mozambique, Jamaica, Zambia, Canada and South Africa. There are many Ulama from many parts of the world who have applied to study the Iftaa course. They could not be accommodated due to lack of adequate facilities. The Darul Iftaa has therefore embarked on an expansion project.
