The total number of rak’ats for the Fajr prayer is four. Two rak’ats of sunnah muakkadah before the fardh prayer and the two rak’ats of the fardh. The two rak’ats before the fardh prayer is the most important of all sunnah prayers.

Aisha رضي الله تعالى عنها relates that Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم said “The two rak’ats before Fajr is better than the world and whatever it contains” (Tirmidhi)

The total number of rak’ats for the Zuhr prayer is twelve. Four rak’ats of sunnah muakkadah before the four fardh. After the fardh prayer two rak’ats are sunnah muakkah and two rak’ats are mandoob(commendable).  The Jum’a prayer consists of four sunnah muakkadah before the fardh and four sunnah muakkadah after the fardh. After these four rak’ats another two rak’ats are mandoob.

Umm Habiba رضي الله تعالى عنها narrates that Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم said: “Whoever performs four rak’ats before Zuhr and four rak’ats after Zuhr Allah will make the fire forbidden upon him”(Tirmidhi)

The total number of rak’ats for the Asr prayer is six or eight. A person has an option of performing two or four rak’ats before the fardh. However, performing four is better. Performing these rak’ats are mandoob. Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم  made dua for a person who performs four rak’ats before Asr.

Ibn Umar رضي الله تعالى narrates that Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم said: “May Allah have mercy on the one who performs four rak’ats before Asr.” (Tirmidhi)

The total number of rak’ats for the Maghrib prayer is five rak’ats. Three fardh and two sunnah muakaddah. If a person performs six rak’ats after Maghrib he shall gain the reward for all his sins being forgiven. This is known as the Awwabeen prayer. One may include the two sunnah of Maghrib in counting these six rak’ats.

Abu Hurayra رضي الله تعالى عنه narrates that Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم said: “Whoever performs six rak’ats after the Maghrib prayer, without talking any evil talk, will be credited the reward of twelve years of worship.” (Tirmidhi)

Original Source Link
