When the Imam says Sami’allahuliman Hamidah, do we as muqtadi also say it? Or do we only say Rabbana Lakal Hamd?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

When the Imam says Sami’allahuliman Hamidah, do we as muqtadi also say it? Or do we only say Rabbana Lakal Hamd?
When exactly do we say Rabbana Lakal Hamd? Is it during the motion of getting up, or only after standing up straight (i.e. in the posture of perfect qiyam)?
Do we (muqtadi) pronounce Rabbana Lakal Hamd loudly/audibly?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

1) When the Imam says “Sami’ Allahu liman hamida”, it will suffice for the muqtadee (follower) to only say “Rabbana lakal Hamd”. If one is praying alone, he should say both Tasmee’ and Tahmeed.

(Al-Hidayah, Vol. 1, P. 106, Maktabah Shirkah)

(Darrul Mukhtar, Vol. 1, P. 497, HM Saeed)
(Fatawa Alamgiree, Vol. 1, P. 74, Rashidiyya)

2) A muqtadee should say Tahmeed (Rabbana lakal Hamd) whilst in the motion of getting up from ruku’. The muqtadee should start saying Tahmeed while the Imam is saying tasmee’ (Sami’ Allahu liman hamida).

(Al-Mabsut, Vol. 1, P. 24, Dar-al-Fikr)

(Halabi Kabeer, P. 319, Suhail Academy-Lahore)

3) Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) is reported to have said: “Do not hasten before the Imam. When he says the takbeer, then you should do the same. When he recites “Walad daaleen”, then you should say “Ameen”. When he makes ruku’ then you should make ruku’. And when he says Sami’-Allahu liman hamidah then you should say Allahumma Rabbana lakal hamd”. (Sahih Muslim)

A muqtadee should say “Rabbana lakal Hamd” softly just as he should say “Ameen” softly after the Imam recites Surah Al-Fatihah in the audible prayers.

And Allah knows best
