Regarding attending mixed gatherings, or un-islamic functions hosted by our relatives, if we don’t attend, the ties get severed, and relationships stand broken. What to do?

Can we attend for the sake of maintaining the relationship? If we break the ties, how can we educate them about the Deen, and do the work of Tabligh among these kind of people?
