Is a woman’s voice considered as her awrah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I would like to know, is a womans voice awrah? And Is it permissible for a baaligha girl/woman to recite Quraan to a non-mahram male for the purpose of learning or as is done at Girls Qiraat/Quraan Memorization Competitions?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, it should be noted that Shariah closed all doors leading to fitnah when dealing with women. Hence, the laws of segregation of sexes, hijab and lowering gazes. It is thus deduced that any conduct that may lead to Fitnah with women will be prohibited. It is a well-known fact that a woman’s voice (like a woman herself) has a natural attraction to men. If there is a need for a woman to talk to a Ghayr Mahram male, then she should not talk in a soft and alluring voice. Allah Ta’ala says:

Translation: “O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech [to men] …” – (33:32)

The reason for not talking in an alluring voice is stated in the next part of the verse:

Translation: “…lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.” (33:32)

It is clear from the above, that the voice of a woman has the potential to arouse the feelings of a man. The voice of a woman should be kept as Awrah if there is no need. However, the voice of a woman will be exempt from being an Awrah due to need and necessity and if it does not lead to Fitnah. When a person recites Quran, he ought to recite with Tajweed and in a beautiful voice.

Translation: It was narrated that Abu Bara’ said: “The Messenger of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: ‘Make your voices beautiful when you recite Quran.'”-(Sunan an-Nasa’i-1015)

A woman naturally has sweetness and attraction in her voice. The natural sweetness of her voice coupled with the sweetness of the recitation of the Quran has a great potential of attracting a male teacher to Fitnah. This is a reality with many case histories of such fitnah.

A girl who is about to become Baaligha and a girl who is Baaligha should both learn Quran and Hifz from a female teacher to avoid Fitnah. There are many Muallimat (female teachers) and services available for women to learn Quran and Hifz.[1]

In this era of Fitnah, females should exercise precaution. Many sincere females hoping to learn Quran and Hifz get caught up in the Fitnah of the Nafs of male teachers. This is detrimental to their Deen and modesty. It is not permissible for females to take part in Quran memorization competitions. The fitnah in such competitions is obvious and abundantly clearespecially in this age of technology where programs are recorded and easily circulated.
