Assalamualaykum Dear Scholars
Can one spend some part of the nafil sadaqa he takes out on behalf of the family, on kids’ needs? So basically, if my husband takes out nafil sadaqa on a monthly basis on behalf of the whole family, can he use some of it to buy things for the kids or wife?
JazakAllah khair
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If your husband took out nafl sadaqah to give to the poor and needy, then ideally it should be given to the poor and needy in order to realize the barakah and blessings of sadaqah.
However, if the husband uses the sadaqah set aside to give to the poor and needy to spend on the family, he may do so. Spending on the family is also a form of sadaqah.
إِذَا أَنْفَقَ المُسْلِمُ نَفَقَةً عَلَى أَهْلِهِ، وَهُوَ يَحْتَسِبُهَا، كَانَتْ لَهُ صَدَقَةً
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “When a Muslim spends something on his family seeking to receive Allah’s reward, it is regarded as sadaqah for him.”(Sahih al-Bukhāri-5351) [i]
