Incorrect Info on Scholarship Application

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I am a degree student now , I got married last year(before taking admission  in the degreee college). Can I apply for scholarships  on my father’s account (by giving his income details) which is eligible to apply scholarship but my wali’s income  is higher so it doesn’t fullfil the eligibility criteria.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

Truthfulness and honesty are amongst the essential and fundamental values of Islam and are accentuated by Shariah. Consider the following verse:

Translation:O you who believe, fear Allaah and be from amongst the truthful.”  (Surah Al-Tawbah: 119)

The messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) looked down upon and condemned any form of lying, deceiving, dishonesty etc. Consider the following Ahadith:

Translation: “The one who deceives is not from amongst us” (Abu Dawud: 3452)

Translation: “There are three characteristics of a hypocrite; when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks it, and when he is trusted he breaches the trust.” (Bukhari: 33)

Translation: Imam Malik narrates from Safwan ibn Sulaim…“Can a Mu’min be a liar?” Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said no. (Muwatta-Malik: 1832)

Speaking lies and deceiving are both major sins. We advise you to refrain from incorrectly stating any information on your scholarship application. Try your best to acquire the scholarship through the correct channels avoiding any lies. Alternatively, you may consider other scholarship applications which you may be eligible for without the need to provide incorrect information. Inshallah, by doing so and stating the truth, it will lead a person to recognize Allah and will be a means of reward.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
