Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Asalaamu alaykum

I would like to enquire if the following duas are authentic and can be read for one to become a calm n cool person in general. Or is there anything else one can read in abundance. I do however read astaghfirullah in abundance but I’m looking for something to make me not loose temper to begin with.

Your response will be highly appreciated

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You enquired about the authenticity of the following Ahaadith:

1.

Translation: Abu Umamah (Radhiyallahu Anha) narrates: “The Messenger of Allah () supplicated with many supplications of which we did not preserve a thing. We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you supplicated with many supplications of which we did not preserve a thing.’ He () said: ‘Should I not direct you to what will include all of that? That you say: O Allah, we ask You from the good of what Your Prophet Muhammad () asked You for, and we seek refuge in You from the evil of that which Your Prophet Muhammad () sought refuge in You from, and You are the one from Whom aid is sought, and it is for You to fulfill, and there is no might or power except by Allah”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Hadith No.3521)

The above Hadith is narrated by Imaam Tirmidhi in his Jami-at Tirmidhi, and he classifies the narration as sound.[i]

2.

Translation: Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father that Ayesha (Radhiyallahu Anha) said : ‘The Messenger of Allah () entered upon me whilst I was angry, so He () rubbed the tip of my nose and said, “Oh my little Ayesha say, ‘O my Allah, forgive my sins, remove the anger in my heart and protect me from Shaytan” (Amal Al-Yawm Wal-Lailah – Ibn-Sunni  Hadith No. 622)

The above Hadith is narrated by Ibn-Sunni in his Amal Al-Yawm Wal-Lailah. Allamah Iraqi classifies the narration as weak.[ii]

The traditional scholars have stated that one may practice on weak narrations that are pertaining to matters of virtues and encouragement.[iii] Therefore, you may continue reading the above Duas.

We advise the following methods to overcome anger:

1.     Recite Ta’wuz:

Translation: Sulaiman bin Surd (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated: While I was sitting in the company of the Prophet, two men abused each other and the face of one of them became red with anger, and his jugular veins swelled (i.e. he became furious). On that the Prophet said, “I know a word, the saying of which will cause him to relax, if he does say it. If he says: ‘I seek Refuge with Allah from Satan.’ then all is anger will go away.” Some body said to him, “The Prophet has said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from Satan.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith No.3282)

2.     Change posture:

Translation: AbuDharr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated: “The Messenger of Allah () said to us: When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down.” (Sunan Abi-Dawood Hadith No.4782)

3.     Keep the following Hadith in mind:

Translation: Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah and said: “Teach me something that is not too much for me so that, perhaps, I may abide by it.” He (S.A.W) said: “Do not get angry.” He repeated that (the request) a number of times, each time he replied: ‘Do not get angry.” (Jami At-Tirmidhi Hadith No.2020)
