Salam Mufti Sab, Today my question is about gambling. In my country , we have something call big sweep. How to play: 1.buy a ticket at $3 each. 2.Draws on every first Wednesday of each month at 6pm. Results: If your ticket number matches any of the 133 winning seven-digit numbers drawn, you win a prize of at least $1,000 and up to $2.3 million. If the last two digits of your ticket number match any of the nine winning two-digit numbers drawn, you win $6. Is this considered gambling ? Many of my Muslim Friends are playing. Please advice us.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuhu.
The ‘Big Sweep’ described by you is gambling[1]. Gambling is a major sin and is prohibited in the Quran.
يا أيها الذين آمنوا إنما الخمر والميسر والأنصاب والأزلام رجس من عمل الشيطان فاجتنبوه لعلكم تفلحون، إنما يريد الشيطان أن يوقع بينكم العداوة والبغضاء في الخمر والميسر ويصدكم عن ذكر الله وعن الصلاة فهل أنتم منتهون (المائدة)
Translation: “O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; avoid them so that you may attain success. The devil desires only to create enmity and hatred among you by means of intoxicants and games of chance, and to keep you back from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you then keep back” (Al-Ma’idah / 90-91)
Advise your friends about the prohibition of ‘Big Sweep’.

قمار تو کسی طرح جائز نہیں جو صورت حدیث سے اور فقہاء کے کلام سے جائز معلوم ہوتی ہے وہ قمار نہیں بلکہ قمار سے خارج ہے ۔
فتاوی دینیۃ (4/111-109)
لاٹری بھی نئے زمانے کا جوا ہی ہے، اس لئے نکلی ہوئی حرام رقم استعمال کرنا جائز نہیں(109)…آج کل ہمارے يہاں نیشنل لاٹری کے نام سے جو وبا پہلی ہوئی ہے وہ قرآنی ارشاد کے مطابق قطع ناجائز اور حرام ہے ۔
کتاب النوازل (11/423)
لاٹری کا معاملہ سراسر جوا و قمار ہے، اس میں کسی طرح کا بھی حصہ لینا ہرگز جائز نہیں ۔
فتاوی محمودیۃ (24/488)
انعامی لاٹری کا یہ سلسلہ خلاف شرع ہے، ہر گز اس میں حصہ نہ لیا جائے ۔
