I stood up for a Hindu religious worship. What does Islam say about this?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

It was an opening assembly in my college when some people brought a big utensil with small candles, and they lighted it with fire, and said that like how these candles were lighted, children future also would be lighted. Those people were Hindus and put on a religious Hindu song instrumental in background. Also the utensil was like vase and had yellow jasmine and white jasmine flower decorated usually how Hindus decorate temples and idols. When candles were being lighted, slowly all started to stand up. Since all were almost stood up, if i sit i would look odd and they may think i am religious in islam and that if such act was of hindu religion, then i was enemy of hindu gods and they would ignore me and develop hatred towards me, although none of them i knew but still who saw me, might in future be in my college class or any time they see me in campus they recall about me and they may tell others also about me. Also a muslim boy told me to stand up while i kept sitting and my family would also think me as extremist in islam and if i kept sitting then muslim boy and family would view islam as very extreme that one must not stand up for hindu act even if it looks wierd that sitting while everyone is standing, even respect for hindu gods not by heart but just since everyone is standing, so stand not to look wierd. But i did stand while my heart was not to respect the act but due to above reasons. Am i out of islam? Was the act shirk or kufr or something to take me out of islam?

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh

You stated in your query that you stood up for the assembly in your college when everyone else stood up because you were afraid people will have negative thoughts about Islam. You also enquired, will this constitute kufr even though you did not respect their actions?

It is prohibited to stand up in an assembly that contains unIslamic activities that includes religious rituals of the Kuffar and the Hindus, intermingling with the opposite gender, clapping hands, whistling, and celebrating with music.[i]As Muslims we vehemently  guard and protect our beliefs from any action that will compromise our Imaan and belief in Allah Ta’ala.

In principle, to show respect and reverence to Kufr or anything related to Kufr tantamounts to  Kufr. Accordingly, standing for a Hindu religious worship may remove one from the fold of Islam. Therefore, we advise you to refresh your Imaan and be extra vigilant in the near future from attending such places.

The procedure for Tawbah for this action is in the following:

1.     Recite the Shahadah

2.     Regret the sin

3.     Resolve never to commit the sin again.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
