Self-stimulation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamualaikum,

I am an unmarried 15+ years old muslim male. I follow the hanafi madhab and I found a ruling for the hanafis, that if a person fears that he/she might commit fornication/adultery, in that case, masturbation is allowed, like seeking a relief through it rather than fulfilling the desire. i want to know that if I have a desire for watching porn amd to avoid this desire and abstaining from commiting the sin of watching porn, can I masturbate?Jazakallahu khairan in advance. Please help me find a solution as soon as possible.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Answer:

The biological change within a person wherein he has an urge to fulfil his carnal desires is natural. The challenge is to fulfil the carnal desires in a halal way and not in a haram way. Masturbation is haram (prohibited). In principle, one cannot commit a haram act to avoid another haram act, impure clothing washed with urine will still be impure. If one takes to masturbation to avoid watching porn, the next time he has a desire to watch porn, he will again turn to masturbation. That will lead to an addiction to masturbation. A person will now be sinning and masturbating despite him not having an urge in him to watch porn. The solution is to avoid watching porn and all those things that aggravates one’s desire.

Hereunder are practical advices to control one’s carnal desires:

Ø Be conscious that Allah Ta’ala is watching you. Would you commit this immoral act in the presence of your father or mother or any person you respect?

Ø When you have an urge to commit sin, ponder upon the verse الم يعلم بان الله يرى, (Does he not know that Allah is seeing?) The more you ponder upon this verse, the more you will experience Allah consciousness in you. That will deter you from sin.

Ø Avoid all things that aggravates one’s carnal desires, eg: intermingling of sexes, viewing of immoral material etc

Ø When you have an urge to sin, remind yourself that death is imminent. What if I die while committing sin or being in an immoral environment?

Ø If it is possible to get married, then do so. If it is not possible to get married then fast, as that reduces one’s carnal desires.[1]

Ø Adopt the company and friendship of pious people.

Ø Obtain a copy of Qaseedah Burdah by my honourable teacher, Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb, for spiritual revival and a more effective outcome. You may also access it via the following link: https://daruliftaa.net/qaseeda-burdah/

Ø  Keep yourself engaged in something constructive. ‘’Don’t be idle as an idle mind is the playground of shaytaan.”[2]
