Is smoking weed Haram?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My friends are used to weed. They even smoke weed in ramadan after every iftaar. Is it haram or not? Does it invalidate their fast or not?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant. [1]

A psychoactive drug or psychotropic substance is a chemical substance that acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness and behavior. [2]

Marijuana—also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, Mary Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms—is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried flowers of Cannabis sativa. Some people smoke marijuana in hand-rolled cigarettes called joints; in pipes, water pipes (sometimes called bongs), or in blunts (marijuana rolled in cigar wraps). [3]

Like tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke is an irritant to the throat and lungs and can cause a heavy cough during use. It also contains levels of volatile chemicals and tar that are similar to tobacco smoke, raising concerns about risk for cancer and lung disease. [4]

People who smoke marijuana tend to hold the smoke in the lungs for a longer period of time than people who smoke tobacco. This increases the risk of lung damage. [5]

It is impermissible to smoke weed. [6]

Smoking weed after Iftar does not nullify the fast of that day or the next day. However, it could affect the spirituality and quality of one’s fast. This may affect the reward one will receive for fasting and may harm his relationship with Allah Ta’ala.

We advise you to kindly encourage your friends to quit this bad habit. Do not mix with them when they are involved in such activities.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
