Renewing one’s imaan and nikaah due to evil thoughts

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

AssalamoAlaikum, Since knowing about tajweed e nikkah and tajweede imaan. I am getting lots of bad thoughts which i deny in my mind and something just say No, no bad intention or normal or whatever comes to my mouth i say it to avoid those thoughts in mind. Sometimes i swear myself to avoid those bad thought. Some thoughts starts to make me confused so much that then i start researching on net to clear my mind and to repel shaitanic whispers. I know its even increasing my problem rather than solving. Someone told me if bad thought comes then don’t even say astagfar and not to react in anyway. But what should i do as those bad thoughts I cannot even imagine thinking of them so i say astagfar or no no or something. I read somewhere that even thoughts which are accepted in heart can be kufr. But then now i get confused whether the thoughts may get nauzo billah, Astagfirullah accepted which is impossible. I keep getting wasawis and I cannot even write what bad thoughts comes to my mind as I don’t want to be sinful even by stating them. Then i start researching on net if confusion comes and then it clears my mind about religion, Allah and prophet. My mind keep bothering me even i try to avoid bad thoughts. 1. Does researching on some confusion coming to mind cause kufr ? I feel like if someone researches it , it means that a person may have accepted in heart ( determination) astagfirullah. 2. Isn’t it that everything comes in mind is forgiven and how a person identify whether he has made concrete belief in heart ? As this thing is really confusing me whenever some bad thought comes and if i keep thinking about it or research to clear my mind then my mind says that astagfirullah i may had accepted that. Please clear my mind as i keep getting upset over these things and keep crying as I don’t want to commit any kufr astagfirullah. Then i think if kufr committed then tajweede nikkah is compulsory and a person like me with wasawis its hard to renew nikkah all the time. If i don’t think about renewal of nikkah then i get scared of adultary which is also a great sin. My mind is in a mess. 3. If someone utter anything mistakenly but didn’t intend anything bad by it or something slips out of mouth without person intending it. Will that be forgiven and would renewal of nikah be compulsory? Isn’t it that actions but by intentions. Please respected mufti clear my mind. I am very sensitive about my faith and love my religion Islam and don’t want to be sinful in anyway. JazakAllah khair

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the contents of your query.

It is clear that you are suffering from waswasah. There is no need to renew you Islaam or your nikaah. The confusing and questionable thoughts that come to your mind are indeed a sign of your Imaan.

The Sahaabah (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhum) enquired from Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) regarding such thoughts saying, “We find in ourselves thoughts that are too terrible to speak of.” He (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied,

ذاك صريح الإيمان[1]

Translation: “That is a clear sign of faith.” (Muslim 209)

We advise you not to entertain these thoughts and doubts. They are from Shaitaan. Keep yourself busy with other things. Recite the following abundantly to overcome your situation,

أعوذُ باِللهِ مِنَ الشَّيطَانِ الرَّجِيم[2]

Translation: I seek refuge in Allaah from the rejected devil.

لاحول ولا قوة إلا بالله

Translation: There is no power and no might except with Allaah.

آمنت بالله وبرسله[3]

Translation: I believe in Allaah and His messengers.

You may also read the following book: Combating the Whisperings of Shaitan by Shaykh Yunus Patel (Rahimahullaah) for effective methods on dealing with waswasah.

Also, you may consider consulting a psychiatrist for further advice.

You may listen to the discourses of my honorable teacher, Mufti Ebrahim Desai (Hafizahullaah) on the Qaseedah Burdah for spiritual enhancement. The discourses are available here[4].
