Offering Salaah behind an Imam who changes his school of thought

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamualaikum WR WB,

I  am a guy who spent 4 months in Tabligi Jamaath in the path of Allah.

I transferred to a place near to hyderabad, India.

I saw the Imam of the Masjid intially offerred prayer in the Hanafi style.

After 1 month, I suddenly saw he started offering Namaz by Raffediens .. looks like Shafi Namaz.

Can I offer namaz in the back of that person who changes Maslaqs like this?

I  found him saying ‘ALLAHUAKBAR’ takbeer loudly after every Namaz. Is there any hadees  like this  saying Takbeer Loudly?Because I didn’t find saying ALLAHUAKBAR Takbeer loudly in any Masjid.

He is  forcing all the musalli to offer namaz with Raffediens and say thakbeer loudly after  every namaz.

Please Clarify me regarding this?

JazakallahuKhair

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Raf’ul Yadain (رفع اليدين) is made up from two Arabic words, raf and yadain.

Raf’ means to raise. Yadain means two hands. There are differences of opinions among the Imams of the mazhab regarding raising the hands in salaah besides raising the hands for takbeer-e-tahrima (the takbeer for commencing salaah).

According to Imam Shafie, raf’ul yadain is Sunnah. However according to the other three Imams, raf’ul yadayn is only established in the beginning of salaah at the time of takbeer-e-tahrima.[1]

Each Imam’s view is based on the Ahadith and practice of Rasulullah (ﷺ). These differences are based on what is preferred.

The differences are not based on permissibility and impermissibility. According to Imam Abu Hanifa, it is permissible to make raf’ul yadain and according to Imam Shafi’ it is permissible to not do raf’ul yadain.[2]

Every muqallid (adherent) of his mazhab should follow the rules and guidance of the Imam of his mazhab and he should tolerate and respect the view of the other mazhab. It is incorrect for a follower of one mazhab to insist on the view of his Imam. It is also incorrect one who is not a mujtahid to deduce his own rulings directly from the Ahadith.

It is also incorrect for a person to leave out following his mazhab and follow another mazhab.

In view of the above mentioned principles, it is incorrect for the Imam to impose raf’ul yadain on all the musallis. That is the attitude of hard-core salafis who claim to practice on the Hadith of Rasulullah (ﷺ).

Consider the following hadith wherein it is recorded that raf’ul yadain was not done:

حدثنا هناد، قال: حدثنا وكيع، عن سفيان، عن عاصم بن كليب، عن عبد الرحمن بن الأسود، عن علقمة، قال: قال عبد الله بن مسعود: ألا أصلي بكم صلاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم؟ فصلى، فلم يرفع يديه إلا في أول مرة.[3]

Translation: Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (Radhiyallahu Anhu) said:

Should I not show you the Salaah of Rasulullah (ﷺ)? Then he prayed and did not raise his hands except in the beginning.

The practice of reciting Allahu Akbar after salaah is permissible[4].However, that should not be made compulsory as that will lead to bid’ah (Innovation).

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
