Women Studying Abroad

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My husband is in army and he therefore lives away from me.i have secured a scholarship for PhD in Australia and my husband really wants me to avail it. We have safe means of travel these days and we know religious people and distant relatives and friends there in Australia. The intention is to make frequent visits to Pakistan whenever my husband is on leave. Moreover, he will also join me there for about a month. However, I am confused because I have read the ruling about woman not allowed to travel without mahram. I want to go because this will make me feel less lonely here without my husband and because it will secure us financially utilizing the period when I have to live without him anyway. Can you please advise me regarding all this. JazakAllahu kher

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is prohibited for a woman to travel abroad without a mahram.[1] Your husband may travel with you and leave you in Australia with your relatives and in a safe environment where you will not get caught up in any fitna. Bear in mind that we are living in an era in which evil and immorality is rife. The issue is not only safe means of travel and having relatives. Shari‘ah takes into consideration the safety of one’s Iman as well.

And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best.
