Do the following statements constitute Kufr?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

AoA, I would like to know if any of the statements below constitute kufr and what to do if the people around you say stuff like this

1.Someone said “ Namaz, leading taraweeh all of that isn’t important anymore”. Meaning he doesn’t want to do it anymore and he wants to focus on other things like school and work

2. Someone says “Jesus” or “jeez” as an expression, just out of habit. Like when someone is being annoying they will say, “Jesus, stop doing that”. This person is muslim and they don’t mean it in the sense that christians say it in because they know that Hazrat Esa (PBUH) is a prophet. So they don’t mean it to be kufr and I would like to add that a lot of people who aren’t religious or christian say this too.

3. He said “ Namaz say kuch nahi hota hai” out of frustration

When our ammi was talking about salah and its importance and everything and how when u pray it can change so many things for you. I dunno what he meant but he was really frustrated and annoyed at the time because whenever our ammi used to see him she used to tell him to read namaz. He might have meant that namaz doesn’t physically change anything? I dunno, but I don’t think his intention was kufr.

4. Jokingly said “Our lord and saviour Jesus Christ,” and then they made a cross on their chest like the christians do and looked up (towards the sky) like the christians do. This person used to jokingly do this a lot and say stupid things like this all the time ( they also put their hands together and say namaste, but I dunno if that counts because here in the west lots of people say it without meaning anything). I told them not to do it and explained the severity of saying things like this and when they did this in front of our aunt she also told them not to do it. She also told this person to repeat the kalimah as a form of precaution, and she made them repeat the kalimah after her (She said the first part of the kalimah,” la ilaha illalah “and then this person said the second half “muhammadurrasulullah”, does this count as retaking the shahadah).

After our aunt told them not to do it, they haven’t done this again. However they did jokingly say “our lord and saviour jesus christ, the holy spirit” to me the other day. When I asked them not to say that, they said “oh I meant lord, as in someone with a lofty position and saviour in the sense that Jesus christ (pbuh) will come and save us all. I then asked them why they said “holy spirit” and that the holy spirit does not refer to Jesus christ in the christian beliefs” and asked them yet again to stop saying dumb things like this.

Whenever someone has approached them telling them not to say these things, they always laugh it off and then say “okay, I will recite the kalimah again don’t worry”

I feel as if this person doesn’t not take me seriously, maybe because I am younger than them and I sometimes do overreact in things like this. I really want them to stop saying dumb things like this, but I do not know how to stop them. When they say dumb things like this it gives me a lot of anxiety.

I also want to know that if someone says something which might have taken them out of the fold of islam unknowingly. If anytime after that they recite the kalimah, does that count as retaking the shahadah or do they have to say the kalimah with the intention of retaking shahadah for it to count?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

A believer is sensitive his to Iman and protects his Iman from all those things which can contaminate his Iman.

One should avoid anything that risks losing his Iman.  In matters of kufr one should be very cautious.

The statements you refer to are serious and border on Kufr. Allah Taa’la mentions in the Quran:

وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ

Translation: “And if you ask them, they will surely say, “We were only conversing and playing.” Say, “Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?” Surah Tawbah (65)

Seek assistance of local scholars to address your siblings and get appropriate literature on Iman and values of Iman.

It appears that your siblings are affected by their friends. Therefore, advise them to stay in good company.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
