Could you please advise on the name “Maya” for a girl?
I read one of your fatawa which stated the name is not suitable.
However, I then came across another which stated it means “princess” and is suitable.
Could you please clarify this for me? I apologise if I have misunderstood. Also, if it is suitable; what is the correct Arabic spelling?

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has advised us to keep good names for our children.
See the following hadith.
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: “إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ ,فَأَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ“.
Translation: Rasulullah صلي الله عليه وسلم said: “Indeed you shall be called on the day of Qiyāmah with your names and the names of your fathers, so give good names to yourselves” [1]
We were unable to locate the root word of the name “Maya” in the Arabic language. It is a foreign, non-Arabic word. [2]
- Ø In Old Persian language, the name “Maya” means “Generous” “Graciousness”, “Gracious Nature”. [3]
- Ø According to some website, the meaning of name Maya is “Princess” [4].
- Ø In Hindu philosophy, “Maya” means “Illusion”, and in Hindu mythology, it is also an alternate name of the Hindu goddess Durga/Devi. [5]
- Ø In Latin for “Great” or “Larger”. In Roman mythology, Maia is a daughter of Atlas, whose name was given to the month of May. It’s also a variation of the English name May. [6]
- Ø In Bangla language, the word “Maya” means “Love” “Compassion” “Affection” “Kindness”. [7]
It is clear from the above, the word “Maya” has unislamic meanings in Hindi and Latin sources. “Maya” is not a suitable muslim name.
We advise you to keep the name “Mariam” instead of “Maya”.

مايا:
اسم علم مؤنث لاتيني: MAIA أصله عبري محوَّل عن ماري والذي هو مريم. واللاتين يسمون به من ولدن في شهر مايس (آذار). ومايا اسم إلهة الربيع عند الرومان وهي زوجة البركان. ومايا: اسم شعب من الهنود الحمر في أمريكة الوسطى ولاسيما المكسيك.
