Doing laundry on Friday, obeying husband’s command to not due laundry in Friday

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Am I obliged to obey my husband in this? As salaam alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakaatuh, I pray that this email finds you in the best of health and eeman, Aameen. My husband doesn’t want me to do his laundry on Fridays, saying that that’s not a day for Muslims to do laundries. He wants me to do them on Mondays, Thursdays and/or Sundays. We had a discussion about it, I explained to him that there is no such thing alike and that the sunnah doesn’t prohibit us to do so. Now, do I have to obey him on that? Stop doing my laundry on Fridays? What does Sunnah say about that? Is his statement true? Jazzak’Allahu khair!

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, one may do laundry on any day of the week[i]. Considering foreign ideologies to be sunnah or part of Deen will render it an innovation (bid’ah)[ii]. Consider the following Hadith:

من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس فيه فهو رد.[iii]

Translation: “If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected.” (Bukhaari 2697)

Contrary to the above superstition, the following Hadith has been narrated from Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam),

من اغتسل يوم الجمعة وغسل، وبكر وابتكر، ودنا واستمع وأنصت، كان له بكل خطوة يخطوها أجر سنة صيامها وقيامها.[iv]

Translation: “Whoever performs ghusl on Friday, and bathes completely, and goes early, arriving early (to the masjid), gets close (to the pedestal) and listens (to the sermon) and is silent, there will be for him in every step he take the reward of a year of fasting and standing (in prayer).” (Tirmidhi 496)

The Hadith encourages on bathing on Friday. Other Ahaadith also state that one should wear clean clothing. Thus, if one desires to wash his clothes on Friday to practice on the sunnah of wearing clean clothes, he will be rewarded.

Cleanliness is a branch of faith. Hence, attaining cleanliness and washing one’s clothing are acts of worship (‘ibaadah) and one will be rewarded for it. However, preference should be given to other acts of worship that are exclusive to or encouraged for Friday, such as reciting Surah Al-Kahf, sending salutations upon the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam), engaging in du’aa, etc. on the blessed day of Friday.
