I wanted to know whether it would correct to do amal upon the hadith below? Albani has said the narraton is weak. I would appreciate it very much if you could give ref and proof of what the position of the salaf was in regards to the dua and doing amal upon the it?
الحديث صحيح : جاء رجلٌ إلى رسولِ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّم فقال واذنوباه واذنوباه قال هذا القوْلَ مرَّتَيْن أو ثلاثًا فقال له رسولُ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّم قلِ اللَّهمَّ مغفرتُك أوسعُ من ذنوبي ورحمتُك أرجَى عندي من عملي فقالها ثمَّ قال عدْ فعاد ثمَّ قال عدْ فعاد ثمَّ قال قمْ فقد غفر اللهُ لك الراوي: جابر بن عبدالله المحدث: المنذري – المصدر: الترغيب والترهيب – الصفحة أو الرقم: 2/386

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Imam Abu Abdillah Al-Hakim Rahimahullah has narrated this Hadith in his famous book Al-Mustadrak Alas Sahihayn with a sound chain of narrators that he considered to match the standards of Imam Muslim. Thereafter he mentions that “None of the narrators of this Hadith have been criticized”, and Imam Zahabi Rahimahullah has attested to this.
Hereunder is the Hadith with its translation:
“جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: وَاذُنُوبَاهُ وَاذُنُوبَاهُ، فَقَالَ هَذَا الْقَوْلَ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ مَغْفِرَتِكَ أَوْسَعُ مِنْ ذُنُوبِي وَرَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجَى عِنْدِي مِنْ عَمَلِي» . فَقَالَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ: «عُدْ» فَعَادَ ثُمَّ، قَالَ: «عُدْ» فَعَادَ، فَقَالَ: «قُمْ فَقَدْ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكَ».
Translation: “Once a man came to Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم mournful over his sins. The man expressed his state by saying “I have done many sins” repeating it two or three times then Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him, “Say this: Oh Allah, your forgiveness is greater than my sins and my hope in Your mercy is greater to me than my actions” The man said this and Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him, “Say it again.” The man repeated it then Rasulullah صلي الله عليه و سلم said to him, “Say it again.” The man did it and Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him, “Arise, indeed, Allah Ta’ala has forgiven you”. Imam Abu Abdillah Al-Hakim comments:
“حَدِيثٌ رُوَاتُهُ عَنْ آخِرِهِمْ مَدَنِيُّونَ مِمَّنْ لَا يُعْرَفُ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْ بِجَرْحٍ، وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ”.
Translation: “All the narrators of this Hadith are from Madinah and none have been criticized, and Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim Rahimahumallah did not narrate this hadith in their books”. Al-Mustadrak Alas Sahihayn (1/728)
Imam Zahabi Rahimahullah mentions:
“و هم مدنيون و لم يجرحوا”.
Translation: “All the narrators are from Madinah, and they have not been criticized” (which means that the narration is correct). Talkhisuz Zahabi Ala Mustadrakil Hakim (1/728)
Imam Nawawi Rahimahullah has also quoted this Hadith in his famous book Al-Azkar, which is a reliable book on the different Duas to be read at different times. He mentions regarding the narrations that he brought in his book:
“وإلا فجميعُ ما أذكرهُ فيه لي به رواياتٌ صحيحةٌ بسماعات متصلة بِحَمْدِ الله تَعالى إلا الشاذّ النادر”……
Translation: “All of the Ahadith that I will mention (in this book) are correct narrations with a connected chain (I have heard them from my teachers), All praise is for Allah Ta’ala, except some. Al-Azkar pg. 14
“وأما ما كَانَ في غيرهما فأُضيفُه إلى كتب السنن وشبهها مبيِّناً صحته وحسنه أو ضعفه إنْ كانَ فِيهِ ضعفٌ في غالب المواضع، وقد أغفلُ عن صحته وحسنه وضعفه”.
Translation: “As for those narrations that are not in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, I will mention them from the books of Sunan (Tirmizi, Abu Dawud, Nasai, Ibnu Majah) and their likes, explaining the grade of the hadith, if it is sound or weak most of the times, and sometimes I will not”. Al-Azkar pg. 14
It is clear from the above that according to Imam Hakim, Imam Zahabi and Imam Nawawai Rahimahumullah this Hadith is sound. Therefore, you may continue to recite the Dua and hope to be forgiven as stated in the Hadith.

اعلم أنَّ ما أذكرهُ في هذا الكتاب من الأحاديث أُضيفه إلى الكتب المشهورة وغيرها مما قدّمتُه، ثم ما كَانَ في صحيحي البخاري ومسلم أو في أحدهما أقتصرُ على إضافته إليهما لحصول الغرض وهو صحته، فإن جميعَ ما فيهما صحيح، وأما ما كَانَ في غيرهما فأُضيفُه إلى كتب السنن وشبهها مبيِّناً صحته وحسنه أو ضعفه إنْ كانَ فِيهِ ضعفٌ في غالب المواضع، وقد أغفلُ عن صحته وحسنه وضعفه
