I would like to know about Shia history.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,
I am Rakib from Bangladesh, studying Biomedical Engineering at Hong Kong and currently at US. I am very fond of history. However, I do not know of any lecture or source where I can learn about the Shi’a movement and sects from a Muslim/Sunni view.
1) Could you kindly write for me about the history of Shi’a from beginning til today, especially how it originated and including how Iran and Iraq became Shia despite once under Abbasid rule?
2) Could you also share with me a video where I can learn about the history of Shi’a from a Muslim perspective in English?
3) Could you share with me a book in English regarding history of Shi’a?
Jazak Allah Khairan

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.

The following books make a useful read on the topic;

  • “Hidayatush Shia”, in Urdu by Maulana Rasheed Ahmad Gangohi (rahimahullah ta`ala).
  • “Ikhtilaafe Ummah Aur Siraate Mustaqeem” in Urdu by Hadhrat Maulana Yusuf Ludhyaanwi (rahimahullah ta`ala), The English translation of the book is: “Differences of the Ummah”.
  • “Khomeini, Iranian Revolution, and the Shi’ite Faith”, in English by Hadrat Maulana Muhammad Manzoor Nomani (rahimahullah ta`ala).
  •  You may refer to this link for lectures and books by Maulana Taha Karaan (hafidhahullah).

And Allah Ta`ala Knows Best.

Hussein Muhammad.
