Keeping my 2 wives happy

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have two wives. My wives use to take oath by putting my hand on Quran, for different things. For example some times the 1st wife ask me, tell me that you did not went inside the 2nd wife’s home.

Some times my 2nd wife take oath, shey says, swear and tell me by putting your hand on Quran that you have not had done intercourse with the 1st wife in last night.

If i do not swear by putting my hand on Quran they did not believe me. And say that you are not putting your hand on Quran because you have done this or that. Some times when i have to hide something, i have to tell a lie, while putting my hand on Quran. Otherwise they become angry and querrell with me at their utmost, which may prolong on a day or two. I have told them several times that this is not fair to take Quran every when but they did not understand.

What the least i do, while putting my hand on Quran is that, i dont make intention (Niyaat) of that work and i just say the words but i assume something else in my heart.

Mufti sb. please guide me whether doing it is right or wrong? If it is wrong than any other way around by which I can satisfy them and hide the truth from them at a time, so that they dont querrel with me.

May Allah SWT be pleased with you. Aameen!

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You have two wives. You know the emotional implications of having two wives. Each wife knows what she is entitled to from her husband and she should confine herself to that. It is your responsibility to straighten the record regarding the attitude and conduct of each wife. If any wife trespasses the limit, you should discipline her rather than submitting to her pressure.[1] If you do not discipline your wives, they will continue exerting undue pressure on you and no stratagem will relieve you from such a burden.
