subject: Questions related to illness and anxiety

Salam,

I have two questions related to myself.

1) I was diagnosed with a heart condition called pericarditis in March of this year, this has changed my life, I was off work for 6 month, it was a very hard time of my life, have to deal with chest pains, dizziness and anxiety. The question I have is I have heard that illness can be a way of allah blessing you, you will  know this by doing more good deeds, my question is what dua and what can i do to ask allah to stop this illness, I have had it for so long now, my wife has looked after me very well and I think she is becoming distressed from the illness to, please if you have any dua please do tell me I would appreciate it. I am so young only 25 and I want to get back to my normal life again inshala.

2) Because of this illnesss and thinking to much I have developed anxiety, I know its bad and that its all in my mind, I especially become more anxiety and scared when it has anything to do with my wifes pregnancy, since she has not been able to become pregnant for 3 years now. This has distressed me even more on top of my illness. Is there a dua I can do, i am so scared to go drs with my wife because of how this comes about. My dad says anxiety is not for muslims since we leave everything to allah, I read my namaz and quran, i still feel this so much, is there anything I can do to help this at all.

Jazakalah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Allah Ta‘ala says:

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient ones. (Al-Baqara: 155)

The condition of your health is a test from Allah. As believers, we believe in taqdir and destiny. We believe that all good and bad is from Allah. It is wajib (obligatory) to be happy with taqdir as that is the will of Allah.

Almighty Allah is Al-Hakim (the All-Wise). Every act of Allah has wisdom in it. Your present health situation is decreed by Allah. There is some good hidden in this situation which we cannot comprehend. Submit to the will of Allah and make du‘a to Allah to grant you cure. If we believe that sickness is from Allah, then we also believe that cure is also from Allah. Turn to Allah with full conviction and be positive.

The following du‘a is effective in overcoming grief and anxiety:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَقَهْرِ الرِّجَالِ.

O Allah! I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men. (Sunan Abu Dawud, 1555)

And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best.
