Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Does swallowing blood break fast?

Answer

It is prohibited to deliberately swallow blood whether one is fasting or not. Allah Ta’ala says,

انما حرم عليكم الميتة و الدم ولحم الخنزير. . . سورة البقرة :173

He has indeed forbidden upon you dead animals, blood, and the flesh of swine . . . . (2:173)

If one swallows the blood and it reaches the stomach, there are two scenarios:-

1)     If the blood is mixed with mucus or saliva and the blood is equal or lesser than the mucus or saliva, the fast is valid.

2)     If the blood is more than the mucus or saliva, or one can taste the blood, the fast is broken. In this situation qadha will be necessary.[i]

If the blood is excessive and uncontrollable, then present one’s situation to a Mufti for assessment and concession in the ruling.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
