Pease advise on the suitability and permissability of the name Maria/Maariyah/ Mariyyah as a girls name. What is the original languange and does it have an Arabic meaning? Please advise on the correct spelling and pronounciation of the name.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is the infant’s vested right to be honoured with a good name. When choosing a name for the child, it should be done with the intention that the child will be blessed with the barakah of that name. [1]
Consider the following hadeeth:
إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ
Translation: On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your father’s names, so give yourselves good names.
(Sunan-Abu Dawood, Kitaabul Adab)
Maariyah Qibtiyyah (Radhiallahu Anha) was a Sahabiyyah and the slave girl of Nabi (ﷺ) gifted by the Roman king.
The name Maariyah means a woman with a fair complexion, a beautiful woman, lustrous, and gleaming. Therefore, Maariyah is a suitable name. [2]
