PRP treatment whilst fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Hi, I’m suffering from severe hair loss. To cure this, I’ve decided to undergo PRP-treatment which uses platelets extracted from one’s own blood and injects it to the scalp to revive dormant hair cells. It’s the month of Ramadan and I’m naturally fasting, so I don’t wish to do this treatment while I fast because I fear that the amount of blood to be drawn for the procedure may cross the permissible limit for my fast to remain valid. Just to clarify, it’s larger than the amount of blood needed for a regular blood test. However, my doctor isn’t available after sunset (iftar) and has asked me to make an appointment during the daytime. And due to extremely personal reasons, I’m unable to postpone my treatment any further. This is because I’m losing an absurd amount of hair daily and I’m afraid postponing it any further shall lead to permanent hair damage. And I don’t trust any other doctor to perform this procedure on me aside from this doctor. I’m trying to convince my doctor to make an exception in my case as Ramadan is quite important to me, but postponing it is not an option for me anymore. If my doctor agrees, then Alhamdulillah, there shall be no further issues. However, if my doctor doesn’t, then I’ll have to undergo the procedure while I fast. I am young & healthy so weakness from blood loss doesn’t affect my health nor my prayer commitments. My question is if I can sustain the drawbacks which are generally associated with weaknesses due to blood-loss without any trouble or inconvenience, can I undergo the PRP treatment while I fast? Please elaborate.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You have enquired about drawing blood in the state of fasting in the context of the PRP treatment. In general and without reference to the PRP treatment, if the drawing of blood will lead to excessive weakness that may lead you to break your fast, then it should be avoided.[1] If the drawing of blood does not lead to weakness then there is a leeway to do so.

You did not enquire about the Shariah position of the PRP treatment. You may refer to that in our footnotes.[2]

[2] Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) combined with Medical Skin Needling (MSN) is a natural procedure that uses your body’s own plasma to help stimulate the hair follicles encouraging new hair growth. A vial of blood is drawn from your body and centrifugally spun to separate the platelets. The Platelet Rich Plasma containing concentrated amounts of growth factors is then infused directly into the scalp. The skin remains intact and is not damaged therefore promoting constructive regeneration. As the skin begins its wound healing process these growth factors are present in the follicular bulge area, where stem cells are found. This helps to activate the proliferative phase of the hair cycle, which may result in new thicker, hair growth.

Regarding the PRP treatment itself:

Blood, once removed from the body, is also impure thus, it would not be permissible to undergo the PRP treatment if there is an adequate alternative.

There may be a leeway for PRP treatment if there is no adequate alternative to PRP.
