Usage of nasal drops whilst fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamu Aleykum. I have a seasonal allergy. I have a stuffy nose and I can not breathe through my nose and it’s hard for me to work, do wuḍū since I can not draw water in my nose. I use drops for the nose, I read that, but in Hanafi’s madhhab I can not use them in Ramadan. But in other places I read that you can use them if you do not feel their taste in the throat. Sometimes I feel their taste, and sometimes I do not. I try very hard not to get a drop in the throat, but sometimes small amounts fall and I feel their taste and try to spit out what’s got in my throat, but I do not know if the drops reach the stomach because I do not drink so much. I do not drink sprays for my nose. Help and taste the sprays I also feel in the throat when I use out. It’s hard for me to fast with a stuffy nose, but I really want to fast this month. On other days, when I do not have any allergies, I am fasting on Monday and Thursday. When I have a stuffy nose, I’m breathing through my mouth and it’s hard in the month of Ramadan. What do i do? Really looking forward to your reply.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle if one takes medicine through the nose and the medicine reaches the throat, that will invalidate the fast. (1)

In such a situation only qadaha [make up] of the broken fast will be compulsory. (2)

If the nasal spray remains on the surface of the nose and does not reach the throat, the fast will be valid. However, it is most likely that the nasal spray may reach the throat.

We have consulted medical doctors on the issue in reference, we have been advised that there are strong and effective nasal sprays available that can be taken twice a day, during sehri and iftaar and it should suffice. You should consult with your medical practitioner for further advise on the issue
