I harmed people when I did not have a sound mind, will I be accountable for that?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I wanted to get close to Allah so I started reading namaz, sawm, etc… I did a tremendous amounts of zikr and wazaif some of which got into my head and I lost my mind. Now the problem is I started hurting some people unintentionally through words; my question is will I be held accountalbe in the court of Allah because I did not plan this on purpose. After taking some medication Alhamduliallah I feel better and regret what I have done unintentionally but I am worried on day of judgement these people whom I have hurt will go against me. Please advise.  Jizkallah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.

Your zeal to gain the closeness of Allah is commendable. However, it should be kept in mind that when one wants to achieve something, he has to spend time with an expert in that field. If one wants to learn to drive, he will have to stay in the company of a driver. If one wants to learn how to swim, he will have to stay with one who knows how to swim. Similarly, when one wants to gain the closeness of Allah, he has to stay in the company of the righteous and learn how to gain the closeness of Allah. At times self-prescription can be harmful.

You mention you hurt the people unintentionally. You were not in a state of a sound mind. Accordingly, you are excused. Alhamdulillah, now that Allah has restored your health, you may go to the people you have hurt and explain to them the situation of your health and apologise to them.

And Allah Ta`ala Knows Best.
