My question is regarding the naming of a baby

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My question is regarding the naming of a baby. We are due to welcome our baby in a couple of weeks.

My intention is to name the baby starting with letter  N as my name also starts with N. But my wife’s family has a habit of naming the baby based on the month it is born.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

May Allah Ta’ala grant you an easy birth and a healthy child. Aameen.

In general, naming a person is not just about naming and creating an identity. As Muslims, when we name our children after the names of the prophets, sahabi, sahabiya and pious servants of Allah, it also serves as a reminder to one of the values of these great luminaries. Keeping such names, have the potential to revolutionize the nation. When every second person is named after an illustrious prophet or illustrious sahabi or sahabiya, this will give rise to the value system of such people by studying those personalities and going deeper into what they represented. As Muslims, we should adhere to keeping Islamic names to advance the Islamic value that goes with the name.[i]

Naming one’s child with an appropriate name is the right of a child upon their parent. Rasululluah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam has said in a hadith:

إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ

Translation:Indeed, on the Day of Judgment you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers.  Therefore, give yourselves good names.” {Abu Dawud}[ii]

It is advisable to base the name of a child on name of prophets and pious people rather than basing on a month.

Here under are some recommended names of Sahabah, Tabe’en and pious predecessors

Nu’man, Nadhar, Nawfal, Nadheer, Naafi’, Nizam, Ni’mat, Naseem, Nafees, Naveed, Nabeel, Najeeb, Najm, Naaser, Nadir, Nur.
