Inviting relatives for a feast upon khatm of Qur’aan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalaamu alaikum,

My daughter is going to complete reading Quran for the first time.As a matter of expressing joy over Allah’s ihsan shall we invite relatives for a feast so that they too get motivated

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is pleasing to note that your daughter will be completing a recital of the Qur’aan for the first time. We make du’aa that Allaah Ta’aala accepts it from her and takes her from strength to strength. Aameen.

It was a practice of many of the illustrious Sahaabah (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhum) to slaughter an animal and feed the people upon achieving a feat such as memorizing a Surah from the Qur’aan. Consider the following:

تعلم عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه البقرة في اثنتي عشرة سنة، فلما ختمها نحر جزورا[1]

Translation: Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhumaa) narrates that Sayyiduna ‘Umar (Radhiyallaahu ‘anh) learnt Surah al-Baqarah in twelve years. Upon completion, he slaughtered a she-camel. (Shu’ab al-Imaan 1805)

Accordingly, one may invite relatives over for a feast to express one’s joy and to motivate others.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
