Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.

The practise of going out 3 days, 40 days or 4 months in tabligh is not mentioned in the Quran. The prescribed number of days are similar to prescription for a specific course. Various institutions offer various courses that are designed according to the needs of certain people. Some people can avail themselves only for 3 days, others can avail themselves for 40 days or 4 months. If a person avails himself for 3 days, for example, he will empower himself with the course. If he avails himself for a longer period, he will empower himself more. If one avails himself for 3 days every month, he will gradually progress with the course.

The purpose of coming out in tabligh is to be in an environment of Deen where Allah, His Rasul ﷺ and Deen is discussed. That environment makes one concerned about his Deen and makes him practise on Deen. Generally, it is difficult for people to take out time from their daily schedule to refreshen their Deen and practise Deen. It is therefore prescribed for them to take out 3 days every month, 40 days a year and 4 months in a lifetime. This is a mere prescription which has been tried and tested to be effective. Countless of people have joined the effort of tabligh for a few days and that opportunity avails them with an effective environment to develop their Deeni conscious and become practical muslims.

We also advise one to attach himself with a spiritual guide to develop his spirituality and to guide him in challenging and conflict situations.

And Allah Ta`ala Knows Best.
