Jokingly saying ‘I’m not a Muslim”

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I really need your help. According to the hanafi fiqh what do I have to do?

I was joking when I accidently said “Im a non-muslim, haha i dont pray”.

I did not mean it at all. Do I have to reinstate shahadah?

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Brother in Islaam,

As Muslims, we are sensitive to our beliefs. It is kufr to willingly utter words of kufr. Making such statements, even jokingly, takes one out of the fold of Islaam and annuls his marriage.

We advise you to make tawbah and istighaar and repeat your shahaadah, and renew your nikaah if you are married. In the future, think before you speak. Don’t jeopardize your imaan by jokingly making such comments[1].

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
