Can we make use of our medical insurance?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Dear Mufti Sahib,

We are students in Malaysia and for our visa it is required by the concerned department that we do our medical insurance (it’s mandatory for visa renewal).

  1. Can we use this medical insurance when we need it (i.e., when we are hospitalized or doing medical checkup)?
  2. In case we cannot use this insurance or money claimed from the insurance company then what should we do with the money that we have received as medical claims?

Jazakallahu Khair.

    Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

    As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.

    1.      It is permissible to make use of the medical aid facility equivalent to the premiums paid.

    2.      The premium paid is permissible. If one received a pay-out more than the premium paid, that excess amount should be returned to the medical aid company if possible or should be given in sadaqa (charity) to the poor and needy.[1]

    And Allah Ta`ala Knows Best.
