Baby girl names

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamu’alaikum Alhamdulillah, we are blessed with a baby girl. I have short listed few names: Aamina, Aaisha, Fatimah, Hafsah and Zainab. But my father is insisting me to name her as Asra Samreen. I would request you to let me know Is Asra Samreen right name?, it’s meaning and correct spelling. If this name is not appropriate then please suggest few baby girl names. Jazakallah Khair

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Wa-‘alaykum as-salam wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The names you have listed are all suitable names. Aamina was the name of the mother of the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Aisha, Hafsah, and Zainab were the names of three of his wives. His eldest daughter’s name was also Zainab and his youngest daughter’s name was Fatimah (رضي الله عنهن).

Asra is a verb which means to travel at night. It is possible Samreen is derived from Samr which means moonlight. We do not advise keeping the name Asra Samreen.
