Distanced Relationship

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

If someone does a marriage through a representative bcause of distance does they need to remarry again when they unite?

secondly is this kind of long distance marriage is considered as weaker marriage  than marriying in person?Or is there any reason for not doing this distance marriage?

I am engaged for more than 7 months and our marriage will take place after 8 months from now .This is because my fiance cant come home before that.Am I suppossed to do this long distance marriage?I am afraid that we may involve in zina by prolonging relationship. His family isnt comfortable with this idea.Should I suggest them such marriage?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A long distance marriage where both spouses are in different locations is the same as a local marriage where both spouses are present. A long distant marriage is not weaker in any way than a local marriage.

The procedure of a long distant marriage is marriage by proxy. That is to appoint someone as your representative at the location of your future spouse to get you married. It is advisable to record the representation in writing with all the necessary details. The representative will get you married to your future spouse on your behalf in the presence of at least two males or one male and two female witnesses. The representative may fulfil the role of Ijaab (Proposal) and the future spouse will accept the marriage proposal in the presence of the witnesses.
