What are the ways of committing shirk except directly associating anything else with Allah swt?
I mean .i am a muslim.. Me and my friend were debating regarding islam. There came a talk were the other person questioned the authenticity of the Qur’an and the practice of muslim , Whether the sunnah of the prophet is the right practice itself or not .. This created some doubts in my mind .. And i started researching about it,in net .. And ended up reading about other religions too ..,
So my question is .. is this SHIRK?
This fear keeps on haunting my mind that i will never be forgiven for what i have done .i also have this fear that i might have doubted in the religion. Please advice.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykumwa-rahmatullāhiwa-barakātuh.
The Quran is indeed the speech of Allah. This is beyond doubt. In fact, the opening verse of Surah Baqarah is:
(2) ذَلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
Translation: This Book has no doubt in it – a guidance for the God-fearing (Surah Baqarah verse 2)
It was the strategy of the Kuffar at the time of Prohet Muhammed Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam to induce doubts in the minds of people about the Quran to turn them away from the Quran.
Some said:
وَقَالُوا يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ (6)
They say, .O you to whom the Dhikr (the Qur‘an) has been revealed, you are surely insane. (Surah Hijr verse 6)
وَإِذَا رَأَوْا آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ (14) وَقَالُوا إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُبِينٌ (15)
Translation: And when they see a sign, they make fun of it, (14)
And say, .This is nothing but an open magic. (Surah Saffath verse 15).
إنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ (40) وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تُؤْمِنُونَ (41) وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تَذَكَّرُونَ (42) تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (43)
Translation: it is surely the speech of a noble Messenger, (that he conveys from Allah). (40)
And it is not the speech of a poet, (but) little you believe, (41) nor is it the speech of a soothsayer,
(But) little you heed to the advice. (42) It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. (Surah Alhaqqah verse 43).
Allah responded to such doubts with the following challenges.
وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَى عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِنْ مِثْلِهِ وَادْعُوا شُهَدَاءَكُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (23)
Translation: If you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then bring a Surah similar to this, and do call your supporters other than Allah, if you are true. (Baqarah verse 23)
أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٍ مِثْلِهِ مُفْتَرَيَاتٍ وَادْعُوا مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (13) فَإِلَّمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا لَكُمْ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ بِعِلْمِ اللَّهِ وَأَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ(14)
Translation:
Do they say that he has fabricated it? Say (to them), .Then bring ten Surahs like this, fabricated. And call whomsoever you can, other than Allah, if you are true… (13)
So, if they do not respond to your call, then be assured that it has been sent down with the knowledge of Allah and that there is no god but He. So, do you submit? (Surah Hudh verse14)
وَمَا كَانَ هَذَا الْقُرْآنُ أَنْ يُفْتَرَى مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلَكِنْ تَصْدِيقَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَفْصِيلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (37) أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِثْلِهِ وَادْعُوا مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (38)
Translation: And this Qur‘an is not such as could have been made up by someone without (having been revealed by) Allah, but it is a confirmation of that (discourse) which had been (revealed) before it and an elaboration of what is prescribed. , There is no doubt in it.
It is from the Lord of all the worlds. (37)
Or, do they say that he has made it up? Say, .Then, bring a Surah like this, and call whomsoever you can beside Allah, if you are true… (Surah younus verse 38)
The Quran is replete with the Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (31) قُلْ أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْكَافِرِينَ (32)
Translation:
Say (O Prophet): .If you really love Allah, then follow me, and Allah shall love you and forgive you your sins. Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful..(Surah Al-Imran verse 31).
Say: .Obey Allah and the Messenger… Then, should they turn back, Allah does not love the disbelievers (Surah Al-Imran verse 32).
لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا (21)
Translation: There is indeed a good model for you in the Messenger of Allah – for the one who has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah profusely.(Surah Al-Ahzab verse 21)
وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَى رَسُولِنَا الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ (12)
Translation: Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger. But if you turn away, then Our Messenger has only to convey the message clearly.
We advise you not to enter into discussions with people ignorant of Islam.
That is Shaitaans way of misleading and deviating people from the correct path.
You should make sincere tawbah and obtain the English version of Maariful Quran of Mufti Shafi Sahib and read some portion from it every day.

(٢)وَمَنْ يُشَاقِقِ الرَّسُولَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْهُدَى وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّى وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا (١١٥) إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَمَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا (١١٦) إِنْ يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ إِلَّا إِنَاثًا وَإِنْ يَدْعُونَ إِلَّا شَيْطَانًا مَرِيدًا (١١٧) لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ وَقَالَ لَأَتَّخِذَنَّ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ نَصِيبًا مَفْرُوضً(١١٨النساء)
وَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا(النساء)
لَقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ وَقَالَ الْمَسِيحُ يَابَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ رَبِّي وَرَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ مَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدْ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَأْوَاهُ النَّارُ وَمَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ مِنْ أَنْصَارٍ (72) لَقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ ثَالِثُ ثَلَاثَةٍ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَهٍ إِلَّا إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَنْتَهُوا عَمَّا يَقُولُونَ لَيَمَسَّنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (73النساء)
حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَىُّ الذَّنْبِ أَعْظَمُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ” أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهْوَ خَلَقَكَ ”. قُلْتُ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَعَظِيمٌ، قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىُّ قَالَ ” وَأَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ تَخَافُ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ ”. قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىُّ قَالَ ” أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ ”(بخاري)
عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ، قَالَ أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَنْ “ لاَ تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَإِنْ قُطِّعْتَ وَحُرِّقْتَ وَلاَ تَتْرُكْ صَلاَةً مَكْتُوبَةً مُتَعَمِّدًا فَمَنْ تَرَكَهَا مُتَعَمِّدًا فَقَدْ بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُ الذِّمَّةُ وَلاَ تَشْرَبِ الْخَمْرَ فَإِنَّهَا مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَر(ّابن ماجة)
باب اقسام الشرك
ومنها: أنهم كانوا يسجدون للأصنام والنجوم،فجاء النهي عن السجدة لغيرالله تعالي، قال لله تعالي (لا تسجد للشمس ولا للقمر واسجدوا لله الذي خلقهن)
ومنها: أنهم كانوا يستعينون بغيرالله في حوائجهم:من شفاء المريض وغناء الفقير وينذرون لهم،يتوقعون إنجاح مقاصدهم بتلك النذور ويتلون أسماءهم رجاء بركتها،فأوجب الله تعالي عليهم أن يقولوا في صلواتهم إياك تعبد وإياك نستعين
ومنها: أنهم كانوا يسمون بعض شركائهم بنات الله وأبناء الله فنهوا عن ذالك أشد النهي الخ(حجة الله البالغة،زمزم ج١ص١٨٤-١٨٨)
