Can we use lip products that contains linalool in them?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

Linalool /lɪˈnælɵ.ɒl/ is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol chemical found in many flowers and spice plants with many commercial applications, the majority of which are based on its pleasant scent (floral, with a touch of spiciness).

According to Shariah, if the alcohol is produced from grapes or dates, then it is not permissible for one to neither sell nor purchase such items produced.

However, if the alcohol is produced from other substances such as rice, flour, flowers then it is permissible for one to sell/purchase or use such items produced.

Therefore, it will be permissible for one to use lip products that contain the ingredient “linalool” since the alcohol is not derived from grapes or dates. Furthermore, one should only use such products if allowed by a qualified health practitioner given the proven side effects of using linalool based products.
