My son is in serious pain. What does Islam say about Morphine?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My son is terminally ill. He is 6 years old and is in serious pain. What does Islam say about medicines like morphine. This will ease the pain but can contribute to possibly making death comes sooner. I’ll be honest, his body is already starting to shut down. He can no longer control his body temperature, he’s starting to swell, and he has fever rash. He’s in agony. Crying and simpering all day. Regular medications are not working. Please help me

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam, we are sad to hear of your sons’ illness and pain. We make dua Allah grants him courage and relief. Aameen.

The use of morphine to decrease the pain is permissible [1].

The various challenges of life are a test of our Imaan. We take this opportunity to advise the following. Consider the following verse,

“Most definitely we will test you (to see whether you exercise Sabr) with a (little) bit of fear, with hunger and with a shortage in wealth, life (the test is by way of illness, death, difficulties) and fruit (produce and products) So give good news (of entering Jannah) to those who exercise Sabr” [Surah al-Baqarah, verse 155]

Reflect upon the following Ahadith,

Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him), reported: Messenger of Allah () said, “The deeds are considered by the intentions, and a person will get the reward according to his intention. So whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, his emigration will be for Allah and His Messenger; and whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration would be for what he emigrated for”[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Sa’id and Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet () said: “Never a believer is stricken with a discomfort, an illness, an anxiety, a grief or mental worry or even the pricking of a thorn but Allah will expiate his sins on account of his patience” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

“Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah () said: “Allah, the Exalted, says: ‘I have no reward except Jannah for a believing slave of Mine who shows patience and anticipates My reward when I take away his favourite one from the inhabitants of the world.”[Al-Bukhari].
