Permissibility to trim one fourth of the head to terminate ones ihram

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I am planning on going hajj In Sha Allah and had a question to ask before i go. I have battled with depression and self-esteem and was wondering whether it would be permissble to shave or trim short only quarter of the head, towards the end of hajj when one is required to do so. As a hanafi, I would like to know where the quarter head rule is derived from and whether it would be applicable to me and acceptable for me to do so in my situation. Also, in doing so, will my hajj be accepted as complete? In Sha Allah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is a Sunnah and in fact more virtuous to shave the entire head to terminate ones ihram. Consider the following Hadith

The prophet صلى اللة علىه وسلم made Dua of mercy three times for those who shaved their entire head and once for those who trimmed them.[1]

It is also permissible to trim at least quarter of the hair on one’s head. This will be achieved by trimming ones entire hair equivalent to ones fingertips.[2]

During Haj almost every one shaves the hair of the entire head.If you do so, you will be one of the many and you will not feel odd. They is no reason that the shaving of the hair will lead to depression and low esteem. Furthermore you will be most fortunate to have received the 3 Duas of mercy of Rasululah

The following Dua is effective in removing anxiety

O Allah, I seek refuge with you from distress and grief, and I seek refuge with you from inability and laziness, and I seek refuge with you from cowardliness and miserliness, and I seek refuge with you from overpowering debt and the subjugation of men.

May Allah Tala grant you a Hajj-e-Mabroor and an accepted Ziyarah.Ameen.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
