The name ” AMAN ABDULLAH “

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Recently a baby boy was born to us. After some search and mashoorah ( consulting) with family and also a alim, we named the baby ” AMAN ABDULLAH “. But, now I find the transliteration of the name as amaan in some places. So, please guide me as to which is correct pronunciation for the word meaning safety – aman or amaan. And if both mean same, then which is more suitable for a boy’s name. And, does ” AMAN ABDULLAH” mean ” peacful slave of ALLAH “. If not how would you name in order to mean that. Also, now should I change the name? Can one change names ? جزاك الله خيرا

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykumwa-rahmatullāhiwa-barakātuh.

Aman and Amaan both of the Transliteration from the Arabic name امان is correct and are suitable name for a boy.

Aman Abdullah meaning of the name as “peaceful slave of Allah” is also correct. There is no need to change the name. If you are not yet satisfied with the name you’ve already kept you may change the name.

Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) used to change names that were inappropriate. Hadhrat Juwairia (radhiAllaahu anha)’s name was “Barrah”. Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) changed it to Juwairia.

Another girl’s name was Barrah, and Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) changed it to Zainub. One girl’s name was Aasiya (with the Arabic letter ‘Sword’ – meaning a sinner), Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) changed her name to Jameela. One man’s name was Hazan (meaning: hard), Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) changed it to Sahal.

Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that on the day of Qiyaamah, people will be called by their names, hence good names should be given.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
